Weather of the Soul Series: King Tides - When the Waters Rise as They Were Meant To

From the Candle's Glow

There are moments when the sea seems to remember something ancient. The shoreline disappears beneath rising water. Marshes overflow. Waves reach places they do not touch on ordinary days. The ocean appears larger, stronger, almost as though it is breathing more deeply than usual, and yet, nothing is wrong.

The sea is simply following the rhythm written into creation. King tides are not storms. They are reminders. Reminders that nature moves in cycles far greater than ourselves. The moon pulls gently on the oceans, the sun joins its influence, and together they create some of the highest tides of the year. No wind is required. No thunder announces their arrival. The waters simply rise.

There are seasons in our lives that feel remarkably similar. There are days when emotions seem closer to the surface. Memories return unexpectedly. Joy feels deeper. Grief feels heavier. Our hearts seem to hold more than they usually do. It does not always mean something is wrong. Sometimes, like the sea, we are simply responding to rhythms older than our understanding.

The Science of King Tides: When the Moon and Sun Work Together

King tides are the highest naturally occurring tides of the year. Despite their dramatic name, they are not caused by storms or unusual weather. Instead, they occur because of the predictable relationship between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. The Moon's gravity is the primary force that creates Earth's tides. The Sun also exerts a gravitational pull, though its effect is smaller because it is much farther away.

King tides occur when several natural conditions align:

  • The Moon is either new or full, placing the Sun, Moon, and Earth in near alignment.
  • The Moon is at or near perigee, the point in its orbit closest to Earth.
  • These combined gravitational forces produce exceptionally high tides and lower low tides.

These tides are part of Earth's natural rhythm and happen several times each year. Along many coastlines, king tides can temporarily flood roads, marshes, docks, and beaches—even without a storm. Nature reminds us that extraordinary moments can arise from ordinary cycles.

The Spiritual Meaning of King Tides

Spiritually, king tides symbolize emotional expansion. They are the seasons when our inner waters rise. We often think we should remain emotionally steady every day. Nature tells a different story. The ocean does not apologize for rising. It does not resist its own rhythm. It simply responds to the pull it was created to feel. We are invited to do the same.

There are seasons when compassion grows deeper. When creativity overflows. When grief revisits us. When love feels almost too large for words. These moments are not signs that we are broken. They are reminders that the heart, like the sea, lives in cycles.

The Pull of What We Cannot See & Living With Seasons of Emotional Fullness

Standing on the shore, we cannot see gravity. We can’t see the moon reaching toward the ocean, yet the evidence surrounds us. Spiritually, this offers a gentle reminder that some of life's greatest influences are invisible. Love, hope, memory, and faith. The kindness of a stranger. The prayers of someone who never tells us they prayed. Like the moon's pull upon the sea, these unseen forces quietly shape who we become. Not everything that changes us can be measured. Some things can only be experienced.

There are seasons when life feels wonderfully full. Opportunities arrive together. Relationships deepen. Creativity flows. Our hearts seem capable of holding more beauty than we imagined. There are also seasons when emotions rise unexpectedly. We may cry more easily. Feel more sensitive. Remember things we thought we'd long forgotten. King tides remind us that fullness itself is not something to fear. Not every rising water is a flood. Some tides simply ask us to make room.

The Shoreline Is Meant to Change But Live in Rhythm Instead of Resistance

King tides temporarily reshape the shoreline. Water reaches places it normally does not and then, slowly, it returns. The coast is never exactly the same, and neither are we. Each season of life leaves its mark. Not always through dramatic storms. Sometimes through quiet cycles that gently stretch our capacity to love, to grieve, to forgive, and to grow. Change does not always arrive with destruction. Sometimes it arrives with the simple rising of the tide.

The sea does not argue with the moon. It responds. Nature is filled with relationships that depend on trust rather than resistance. Birds migrate. Flowers bloom. Trees release their leaves. The tide rises. Perhaps our spiritual lives become gentler when we stop fighting every season we are in. Instead of asking, "Why do I feel this way?" We might ask, "What is this season inviting me to notice?"

The Glow We Carry Forward

King tides remind us that life is not meant to remain at one emotional depth forever. Some seasons ask us to expand. To feel more deeply. To allow our hearts to reach places they have never reached before. The waters will rise, and they will also return. Both movements are sacred. The moon does not force the sea. It simply calls to it.

May we learn to honor the quiet rhythms within ourselves with the same grace. Not fearing the seasons when our hearts feel fuller. Not resisting the moments when life gently stretches our capacity. The greatest growth is not found in standing still, but in learning to trust the tides that have always carried us home.
